Master Addition
Learn the secrets of rapid mental computation used in competitive exams. These strategies will help you bypass traditional paper-and-pencil methods.
★ Make 10s
Scan for numbers that add perfectly to 10 (or multiples of 10) to simplify the sum before adding the rest.
★ Left-to-Right Addition
Instead of the traditional right-to-left method, add the largest place values (tens) first, then the units. This keeps the running total in your head.
★ Break Apart
Keep the first number intact and split the second number into tens and units to add them sequentially.
★ Rounding Compensation
If a number is close to a multiple of 10, round it up, add it, and subtract the difference. Very useful for numbers ending in 8 or 9.
★ Left-to-Right (Hundreds)
For large numbers, add the hundreds, then the tens, then the units. It requires less short-term memory.
★ Anchor to Hundreds
Borrow from one number to make the other a clean hundred, simplifying the calculation drastically.
