Master Subtraction
Learn the secrets of rapid mental computation used in competitive exams. These strategies will help you bypass traditional paper-and-pencil methods.
★ Count Up (Addition approach)
Instead of taking away, think of the distance between the two numbers. Count up to the nearest 10, then to the target.
★ Subtract in Parts
Break the number being subtracted into units and tens. Subtract the units to hit a round ten, then subtract the rest.
★ Rounding Compensation
Subtract a clean multiple of 10 that is slightly larger, then add back the difference.
★ Same Difference
The difference between two numbers doesn't change if you shift them both by the same amount. Shift them so the second number ends in 0.
★ Borrowing from Zeroes
When subtracting from numbers like 1000, subtract 1 from both to avoid complex borrowing.
