Master Multiplication
Learn the secrets of rapid mental computation used in competitive exams. These strategies will help you bypass traditional paper-and-pencil methods.
★ Multiply by 4
Instead of multiplying by 4, just double the number twice.
★ Multiply by 5
Multiply by 10 (just add a zero), then cut the result in half.
★ Multiply by 9
Multiply by 10, then subtract the original number once.
★ Multiply by 11
For a two-digit number, space the digits and put their sum in the middle. (If the sum > 9, carry the 1).
★ Multiply by 15
Multiply the number by 10, then add half of that result to itself.
★ Break Apart (Distributive)
Split one number into a clean ten and units, multiply separately, and add.
★ Multiply by 25
Multiply by 100 (add two zeroes) and divide by 4 (halve it twice).
★ Difference of Squares
To multiply two numbers equidistant from a "nice" middle, square the middle number and subtract the square of the difference.
★ Line Method Approximation
For extremely large un-memorized numbers, round one to a 10, multiply, then compensate.
